In keeping with the Arts & Crafts philosophy of Head, Heart and Hand, each year we offer those individuals who are planning to arrive early to the Arts & Crafts Conference the opportunity to take a pre-conference workshop.
These workshops are hands-on and are designed to give you the chance to either make something - or to work out a design challenge - for your home.
Space in these workshops is limited and registration is done on a first-come, first-served basis, so don't delay!
Sign-up must be done over the phone (828-628-1915).
Due to the high cost incurred by our workshop instructors in providing their time and supplies, cancellation of workshop participation must be done by February 1st to receive a full refund.
If you have any questions about any aspect of these workshops, please call Bruce Johnson's office at 828-628-1915. Detailed descriptions of each workshop are below.

Basic Arts & Crafts Embroidery
Fri. 8:30-3:00pm
Ann Chaves $130 (including materials)
Noted textile curator, collector
and teacher Ann Chaves is returning to the Arts & Crafts Conference
to again lead a two-part class on Arts & Crafts embroidery and
applique. This class is suited for both beginners and for individuals
who have taken some of Ann's previous classes. This year's project will
be a hand embroidered table runner. The kit, including all necessary
materials, will be provided to each student as part of the workshop.
There will be demonstrations of embroidery stitches throughout the day
as well as a lesson on how to finish your runner with a pulled thread
hem stitch and mitered corners. As Ann's loyal and dedicated followers
will attest, this is a rare and rewarding opportunity to learn an Arts
& Crafts technique that you can utilize long after you have returned
home. See what your finished table runner will look like in the photograph below!

Decorating an Arts & Crafts Tile
Thur. 2:00-5:00 Peg Morar $80 plus $10 for shipping & handling
Feel the urge to express yourself - in clay? Join nationally known potter Peg Morar for an afternoon in her renovated 1917 workshop on the original grounds of the G.P.I. and you will experience for yourself the exhilaration of carefully cutting away leather-hard clay to reveal an Arts & Crafts design. Peg will have waiting for you a 6" square blank clay tile, the necessary tools and some classic Arts & Crafts designs for you to select - or you can bring your own! She will teach you how to transfer the design to the clay and how to remove the unwanted clay to reveal your design. Afterwards you will select a glaze and the following week Peg will fire it in her kiln before sending it to your home. It's an experience you won't find anywhere else: Arts & Crafts tile techniques in an authentic Arts & Crafts workshop.

Decorating an Arts & Crafts Vase
Fri. 9:00-3:00 Peg Morar $135 plus $15 for shipping & handling
If you have
already taken Peg Morar's tile decorating workshop or have experience
working with tile carving tools, Peg has designed a slightly more
advanced workshop for you. This time, instead of working on a flat tile
surface, you will have the opportunity to work on a vase - just like the
decorators did at Newcomb and Rookwood over one hundred years ago. Peg
will have turned each vase and will have ready for you the necessary
carving tools, along with some Arts & Crafts designs. She will help
you transfer one of those designs onto the surface of the vase, then you
will carefully carve away the unwanted clay. Afterwards you will select
a glaze and the following week Peg will fire it in her kiln before
sending it to your home.

Bringing Arts & Crafts Design into Your Landscape
Fri. 8:30-11:00 Paul Duchscherer $90
So,
your house is done (or maybe it isn't), but your yard is bland and
boring. Spring is fast approaching, which means this is the time to
start planning your yard make-over. And who could be a better
instructor, mentor and friend than author Paul Duchscherer? You will
arrive with snapshots of what your yard looks like now (bring several),
along with a sketch of your property. Be sure to include some basic
measurements and identify one feature which you would like to improve in
this workshop. Paul will discuss with the class many of the various
options you could incorporate into your landscape design that will bring
the Arts & Crafts style outdoors, and he will work with you
personally as you make your selections and begin planning your own Arts
& Crafts yard.

Printmaking
Thurs. 2:00-5:00 AND Fri. 9:00-11:30 Laura Wilder $190 (including take home kit)
Students will travel
back in time before ink jet printers and laptops with the latest photo
editing programs even existed to learn the intricacies of linoleum cut
printmaking. You will carve and print two linoleum blocks, to create
several of your own 3” x 5” two-color note cards. Designs will be
provided, or you can bring your own sketches. The printing process
itself will be done using a wooden spoon. Laura will demonstrate the
steps, and as you work, she will tell stories of triumph and tragedy,
using many of her own prints to illustrate. At the end of the workshop
Laura will also provide you with your own printmaking kit to take home
so you can continue on your own printmaking journey long after the
conference weekend has ended.

Using Dyes, Stains and Finishes
Thurs. 2:00-5:00 AND Fri. 9:00-11:30 Dennis Bertucci $150 (including frame & clock)
Frustrated in your attempt to recreate an authentic Arts & Crafts color and finish? Regardless of whether you are going to be working on a piece of new furniture, an antique, a door, or the trim in your house, master craftsman, professional restorer and Style 1900 columnist Dennis Bertucci can take the mystery out of stains, dyes and finishes for you. When you arrive in your jeans and work shirt, you will find everything you need: gloves, apron, brushes, tools, products - and an unfinished oak frame sized to hold the conference poster. On Thursday afternoon Dennis will teach you how to color your frame using either stains or dyes, then you'll leave it overnight to dry. On Friday morning Dennis will show you different Arts & Crafts finishes, one of which you will then apply to your frame as well as an Arts & Crafts style clock. After they dry, you will return to pick them up so that you can take it home to show off your new found wood finishing skills.

Stenciling
Friday 8:30-11:00 Amy Miller $ 90
Author and nationally-known stencil artist and teacher Amy Miller will be returning to the conference to again lead her stenciling workshop. Working with an Arts & Crafts design, you will learn the basic elements of stenciling, including beautiful blending and shading techniques that you can use on walls, fabrics or any stenciling project. You will then use this knowledge to create a lovely table linen for your home. Amy will provide an assortment of stencil materials for you to experiment with and a table linen for your workshop project. Afterwards you will keep your stencil and your finished project linen.
